SUMMARY:Fermenting a Communal Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Fermenting a Communal Spirit: Morris County Taverns, Speakeasies & Social Clubs\nJourney through Morris County’s past with the Morris County Historical Society’s new program, “Fermenting a Communal Spirit.” This engaging event will take you back in time to explore the vital social hubs that shaped the region: its historic taverns, speakeasies, and clubs. We’ll examine how these places did more than just serve libations—they were the very heart of the community, adapting to society’s needs from the Revolutionary War through the modern age.\nThese establishments were dynamic centers of activity, fostering connections and fulfilling diverse community roles. Throughout history, they functioned as local gathering spots, military command posts, and even essential stops for travelers. You’ll also learn how they adapted to changing times—from small-town taverns temporarily becoming courtrooms to some locations providing sanctuary as part of the Underground Railroad. These diverse functions each played a part in defining the county’s character and left an indelible impression on its landscape.\nWe invite you to uncover the powerful stories of resilience and community spirit that echo from these historic spots. From bustling social clubs to hidden speakeasies, these venues uniquely contributed to Morris County’s identity. Come explore their lasting legacies and discover how these gathering places truly helped to forge a communal spirit.\nVisit this Exhibit\nAcorn Hall and Morris County Historical Society’s exhibit galleries are open to the public during regular tour hours or by appointment.\n\nTuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11am–4pm (last tour 3:15pm)\nSundays from 1pm–4pm (last tour 3:15pm)\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Pioneer Productions is thrilled to announce encore performances of their production of Heidi Schreck’s “What the Constitution Means to Me.”  Following a sold-out run of the show in downtown Morristown earlier this year, the original cast and production team will be going on tour with encore performances in July, September, and October at three fantastic venues in Morris County.\nIn partnership with the Morris Museum\n\nSeptember 19 at 2:00 PM\nSeptember 20 at 2:00 PM\n\nAt the Bickford Theater in the Morris Museum\nPioneer Productions, Artistic Director, Dan Vissers, directs Schreck’s boundary-breaking play that breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans. Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human play, she resurrects her teenage self to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives.\nThe cast features veteran Pioneer actor Miriam Salerno as Heidi. Previous Pioneer roles for Salerno include Sugar in Tiny Beautiful Things, Bella in Lost in Yonkers, Annette in God of Carnage, and Beth in Dinner with Friends. The cast also includes Ben Weisman as the Legionnaire and Ashlee Vissers as the Debater.\nWhat the Constitution Means to Me won the Obie Award for Best New American Play and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play.  The play was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.\nPioneer’s January production was called a “tour de force” by MorristownGreen.com, with Salerno giving the “performance of her life.”\nPioneer Productions was incorporated in 2003 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit theatre company by founding members Dan Vissers, Shanna Levine-Phelps, and Jon Mantes. DESCRIPTION:Morris County Historical Society is pleased to partner with local historians and history organizations to present a Morris County Walking Tour Series that celebrates the area’s rich and diverse past. From April through October, join us for nearly 40 guided walking tours that explore almost two dozen communities throughout Morris County, with topics ranging from unique historic districts, downtowns, and neighborhoods to local industries that shaped the landscape, and the individuals who left a lasting impact.\nWhen the Morris Canal was abandoned in the 1920s, many of its locks and inclined planes were dismantled but not completely destroyed. For years, Locks 2 East lay buried until the Borough of Wharton in partnership with the Canal Society of New Jersey began an investigation to determine if the lock could be reconstructed. Now, after years of work, the lock and lock tenders house have been carefully restored. The lock is now in working order and the house is filled with displays and furnished as if the lock tender and his family were still in residence. On this tour we will walk a water-filled section of the Morris Canal to visit the site Lock 2 East that has now been brought back to life. There will be guided walking tours at 11:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 3:30 PM starting at the interpretive panels at the parking lot end of the water-filled canal.\n

SUMMARY:All Hallows’ Eve: Songs of Love, Death, and the Supernatural
DESCRIPTION:Halloween as we know it today did not exist before the 1870s. But the roots of Halloween reach back centuries into our past—to All Hallows’ Eve and ancient holidays and rituals, superstitions, and folklore. Anne and Ridley Enslow bring these ancient mysteries to life with a program of music spanning several centuries.\n
