SUMMARY:Fermenting a Communal Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Fermenting a Communal Spirit: Morris County Taverns, Speakeasies & Social Clubs\nJourney through Morris County’s past with the Morris County Historical Society’s new program, “Fermenting a Communal Spirit.” This engaging event will take you back in time to explore the vital social hubs that shaped the region: its historic taverns, speakeasies, and clubs. We’ll examine how these places did more than just serve libations—they were the very heart of the community, adapting to society’s needs from the Revolutionary War through the modern age.\nThese establishments were dynamic centers of activity, fostering connections and fulfilling diverse community roles. Throughout history, they functioned as local gathering spots, military command posts, and even essential stops for travelers. You’ll also learn how they adapted to changing times—from small-town taverns temporarily becoming courtrooms to some locations providing sanctuary as part of the Underground Railroad. These diverse functions each played a part in defining the county’s character and left an indelible impression on its landscape.\nWe invite you to uncover the powerful stories of resilience and community spirit that echo from these historic spots. From bustling social clubs to hidden speakeasies, these venues uniquely contributed to Morris County’s identity. Come explore their lasting legacies and discover how these gathering places truly helped to forge a communal spirit.\nVisit this Exhibit\nAcorn Hall and Morris County Historical Society’s exhibit galleries are open to the public during regular tour hours or by appointment.\n\nTuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11am–4pm (last tour 3:15pm)\nSundays from 1pm–4pm (last tour 3:15pm)\n\n

SUMMARY:The Big Bang of Modern Democracy
DESCRIPTION:When the Declaration of Independence was issued, the idea that “all men are created equal” was revolutionary. With this seminal document, the Founding Fathers unleashed an open-ended driving force that would shape modern history. Around the world, other countries have declared independence taking the US Declaration of 1776 as a model. This exhibition uses primary sources to illustrate how Americans and people across the world have been inspired by the Declaration in their pursuit of equality and self-determination.\n

SUMMARY:New Jersey Loyalists & the British Army 1775-1783
DESCRIPTION:Join New Jersey author and research Todd Braisted at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum to explore the loyalist experience in New Jersey. New Jersey during the American Revolution resembled a civil war as bad or worse than what was to come four score and seven years later. It was brother against brother, father against son, husband against wife. And nowhere in the state was it more prevalent than in the north: Bergen County. Several thousand New Jersey Loyalists, those residents who actively supported the continuance of royal rule in America, actually took up arms to crush what they termed an “unnatural rebellion.” Join us as we examine the different roles and activities performed by these New Jerseyians throughout the colonies and what became of them at war’s end.\nFREE to MHHM members. SUMMARY:Wharton Canal Day
DESCRIPTION:Morris County Historical Society is pleased to partner with local historians and history organizations to present a Morris County Walking Tour Series that celebrates the area’s rich and diverse past. From April through October, join us for nearly 40 guided walking tours that explore almost two dozen communities throughout Morris County, with topics ranging from unique historic districts, downtowns, and neighborhoods to local industries that shaped the landscape, and the individuals who left a lasting impact.\nWhen the Morris Canal was abandoned in the 1920s, many of its locks and inclined planes were dismantled but not completely destroyed. For years, Locks 2 East lay buried until the Borough of Wharton in partnership with the Canal Society of New Jersey began an investigation to determine if the lock could be reconstructed. Now, after years of work, the lock and lock tenders house have been carefully restored. The lock is now in working order and the house is filled with displays and furnished as if the lock tender and his family were still in residence. On this tour we will walk a water-filled section of the Morris Canal to visit the site Lock 2 East that has now been brought back to life. There will be guided walking tours at 11:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 3:30 PM starting at the interpretive panels at the parking lot end of the water-filled canal.\n

SUMMARY:Randolph Friends Meeting House Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Morris County Historical Society is pleased to partner with local historians and history organizations to present a Morris County Walking Tour Series that celebrates the area’s rich and diverse past. From April through October, join us for nearly 40 guided walking tours that explore almost two dozen communities throughout Morris County, with topics ranging from unique historic districts, downtowns, and neighborhoods to local industries that shaped the landscape, and the individuals who left a lasting impact.\nThe Friends (Quaker) families that settled Morris County starting in the 1740s were pioneers. As pioneers, they had to be self-sufficient, building their own homes, supplying their own food and providing a place to bury the dead. The latter need was the primary reason why, in 1758, the Mendham/Randolph Friends Preparative Meeting purchased the acre of land on which the Randolph Friends Cemetery is located. The Cemetery has today about 112 marked graves, the earliest of which is 1843. However, since the early Quakers did not believe in marking burials, we know that there are many more burials on the site. This tour of the Friends or Quaker Cemetery will convey what we know about its history and the lives of some of the people buried there, including Randolph Township’s namesake, Hartshorn Fitz Randolph. There will be two tours at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.\n

SUMMARY:Colonial Taverns of New Jersey at the Mendham Township Library
DESCRIPTION:\nOn Monday, May 11th at 1pm, join author, Michael Gabriele as he presents Colonial Taverns of New Jersey at the Mendham Township Library.\nJoin Michael Gabriele as he explores the important role the taverns of New Jersey played throughout the War for Independence. New Jersey was the “Crossroads of the American Revolution,” and as battles raged, colonial taverns formed the social network that held the state together. Taverns were the stage for the unfolding drama of a colony transitioning into statehood and making decisions about declaring a war of independence. Taverns were the places where the voices of history took shape, used as recruitment stations for colonial militias and meeting places for local committees of safety. George Washington used taverns as headquarters, where he drafted his many letters and planned strategy with his generals. They were the “seedbeds” for the revolution, strongholds for political activities, beacons for travelers, and venues for entertainment, merriment, and libations.\n\nAbout Michael Gabriele:\n\nA lifelong Garden State resident, Michael is a 1975 graduate of Montclair State University and has worked as a journalist, freelance writer and author for more than forty years. Michael is a member of the board of trustees for the New Jersey Folk Festival at Rutgers University, a member of the executive boards for the Allied Artists of America, New York, the Nutley Historical Society, the Theater League of Clifton, and serves on the advisory board of the Clifton Arts Center.\nSpace is limited. SUMMARY:Colonial Drinking Songs and Toasts
DESCRIPTION:Anne and Ridley Enslow present a rousing concert of colonial drinking songs. There will be plenty of toasts and entertaining tales. Learn about the role of rum in the American Revolution, the origins of our national anthem’s melody, the Battle of the Kegs (a real event!), and enjoy witticisms from Ben Franklin. There’s even a toast or two to King George III (feel free to boo). “Raise a glass to freedom,” and join us in singing to the tune of revolution!\n

SUMMARY:George Washington and His Spies
DESCRIPTION:Join Anne and Ridley Enslow for a musical presentation about spies during the American Revolution. The show will cover espionage on both sides of the war, from the Revolution’s earliest days until its dramatic conclusion. Although the Patriots did not start with the same degree of sophistication as the British, they quickly learned. Dead drops. Invisible inks. Secret codes. Moles and double agents. Incredible courage and outright betrayal. This show has it all—with songs to go along.\n
