SAY THEIR NAMES
There is a saying that you die twice, once when you stop breathing, and a second time when somebody says your name for the last time.
Our project to database Morris County soldiers and share our Soldier Stories over the last few years has been guided by the desire to keep their stories alive. Documented histories, preserved archives, and online genealogy databases have helped us find and share so many amazing stories of our local soldiers over the last four years.
This final installment of our Soldier Story series is dedicated to those soldiers whose stories have been lost. We have proof that they served patriotically during the Revolutionary War, but we can’t find anything about their lives, their families, or their burials.
Stories can be lost for many reasons. Some of these men have common names, making it nearly impossible to wade through mountains of search results with no details to narrow the search. Others might have been casualties of war, dying young, without a wife or children to carry on their legacy. Some might have died in battle, buried on the battlefield in an unmarked grave. Or maybe they died poor and without the means to pay for a gravestone. Some stories might have been misfiled in the records and hard to trace, or the records were lost or destroyed. Or maybe their names were the victims of botched phonetic spelling, making them hard to find.
We don’t know much about these men. But we know their names, and by saying them we can keep these men alive. We honor all of them.
