Morris County is often called the Crossroads of the Revolution, with more Revolutionary War battles and encampments that arose in New Jersey than any other colony — and Morris County hosted many of the central figures from that era and has preserved numerous historic sites where key events unfolded. It will all be the focus of celebratory events throughout 2025 and 2026.
We invite you to discover and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of Morris County to the American Revolution, a legacy that helped create the United States.
Morris County is home to Morristown National Historic Park, the nation’s first National Historic Park, where George Washington and his Continental Army wintered twice. Morris County’s historical impact extends far beyond the Revolution, offering a diverse array of sites like Historic Speedwell, where the telegraph was born, and the remarkable Morris Canal. Strategically located between New York, Philadelphia, and Boston, Morris County occupies a pivotal position, making it easily accessible for both regional and national visitors seeking historical and cultural experiences.

The Semiquincentennial celebration in Morris County was the focus of a live WRNJ radio interview last week, where Morris County’s central role in the American Revolution, upcoming 250th anniversary events, and the economic and community impact of heritage tourism were highlighted.
During the Jim Crow era, travel required careful planning—and courage.

Winter was one of the Continental Army’s toughest enemies. During the Morristown encampments, soldiers faced brutal cold, scarce supplies, and long marches—yet their resilience helped sustain the fight for independence.
As we celebrate the 250th, we’re proud to work alongside the many historical organizations preserving Morris County’s stories—including museums, heritage groups, parks, and preservation societies.

The Feb. 4 broadcast of WRNJ’s “Local Impact” program featured Morris County Commissioner Director Stephen Shaw; Sarah Neibart, chair of the Morris County 250th Anniversary Committee; and Craig Schlosser, a Morris County Historical Society board member and First Night Morris co-chair. The panel joined host Joyce Estey for the hourlong discussion at WRNJ’s Hackettstown studios.
“The Semiquincentennial has arrived, and Morris County is celebrating all year long,” said Director Shaw. “From reenactments and exhibits to driving tours, concerts, a colonial cooking series and hands-on programs, there is truly something for everyone. Morris County was not on the sidelines of the Revolution --independence was fought for and won here. We invite everyone to be part of this once-in-a-generation milestone.”

Inspired by Revolutionary-era brewing traditions, the beer features spruce tips and molasses, with rich pine notes and subtle sweetness. To deepen the historic connection, it was aged for nearly a year in apple brandy barrels from Laird & Company, creating a warm, complex flavor with hints of apple and spice.

Inspired by Revolutionary-era Philadelphia, Robert Hare’s Porter recreates a beer once enjoyed by George Washington, Ben Franklin, and John Adams. To bring this historic porter to life, Fort Nonsense Brewing Co. used locally sourced grain from Rabbit Hill in Shiloh, NJ, and hand-roasted it to achieve the deep color and rich character true to the style.
Expect aromas of roasted barley and chocolate, a smooth malt-forward body, and a subtly sweet cocoa note that finishes long and roasty.

A new traveling exhibit is now on display at the Morris County Library in Whippany, spotlighting the lesser-known New Jersey residents whose lives, labor, and choices shaped the Revolutionary era. As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, the exhibit invites visitors to explore the diverse, often divided experiences of ordinary people living through extraordinary times right here in New Jersey.
The exhibit is free to visit and open during regular library hours throughout the month.
